The Food and Drug Administration is an agency within the US Department of Health and Human Sources
Their job is to protect human health using current scientifically validated information
They can:
Review products
Inspect facilities
They can also Issue:
Deficiency and/or warning letters
Suspensions and approvals
Recalls
Import detentions
Seizures
Injunctions
Prosecutions
The Food Safety Modernization Act was the biggest reform to our food safety system in 70 years
Preventive Controls for Human Food was one of the regulations passed in that act
It focuses on
Identifying food safety hazards
Implementing preventive controls for significant hazards that pose a serious risk to consumers
For each preventive control, companies are required to institute monitoring, corrective actions, corrections, verification, record keeping, and a recall plan
Supply chain management
